TLDSB students compete in the 2026 Battle of the Books competition

Trillium Lakelands District School Board (TLDSB) secondary schools recently competed in the 2026 Battle of the Books competition.

This quiz-style competition, currently in its third year, challenges student teams of four to read seven pre-selected books. Schools then hold competitions where teams race against each other in a head-to-head “first to the buzzer” matchup, where participants earn points by answering questions about the selected books. The winning teams from the school competitions advanced to the Board-level competition, which took place on May 8 at Lindsay Collegiate and Vocational Institute (LCVI).

The team from I.E. Weldon Secondary School won first place, winning $300 for their school library. In second place was the team from Bracebridge and Muskoka Lakes Secondary School, who took home $250 for their school library. In third place was the team from Haliburton Highland Secondary School, who won $200 for their school library.

“At its core, Battle of the Books is about the joy of diving into a good book and the power of working together as a team,” explained TLDSB Secondary Curriculum Services consultant, Kyle Timms. “It was inspiring to see how the students engaged with the books, and celebrated each other’s answers throughout the day. We owe a debt of gratitude to the staff members who volunteered from each school to help with the teams to help make this day a success.”

The event was planned and managed by TLDSB secondary teacher librarians and included a visit from TLDSB Chair of the Board, Colleen Wilcox.
