Mariposa Elementary School students learn about the evolution of the word “racism” through a presentation aimed at promoting inclusivity

On September 25, guest speaker Aubrey Noronha visited Mariposa Elementary School (MES) to speak with students and staff about Colour Blind? Why Being “Not Racist” is Not Enough Anymore.

Noronha is a recognized safe school, mental health, and anti-racism speaker who believes in the possibility of a safer and more emotionally connected school and workplace culture. Through his Hello Hope Canada programs, Noronha seeks to instill his hope for the future into the minds and hearts of youth, educators, families, and professionals.

Through his engaging, youth-friendly presentations, Noronha spoke with the primary division in the morning, and both junior and intermediate divisions in the afternoon. He also had the opportunity to present to parents/guardians after school at the MES staff meeting.

“Aubrey brought such a vibrant and humorous energy to his presentation,” said MES principal, David Sornberger. “Both staff and students were engaged and laughing, while gaining valuable insights. His ability to weave important lessons with humour made the experience memorable for everyone. We couldn’t have asked for a better speaker to both educate and entertain our group!”

Summer break information

All school buildings will be closed to the public for the summer break beginning Monday, July 7, reopening on Tuesday, August 26.

Beginning the week of July 14, the TLDSB Lindsay and Muskoka Education Centres are open to the public Monday to Thursday, 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The first day of school for both elementary and secondary students is Wednesday, September 3. Note, Kindergarten students will have a staggered start.
