On May 21, I.E. Weldon Secondary School (IEWSS) Grade 12 student, Caprice Henwood, was presented with the Canadian Tooling and Machining Association (CTMA) High School Award from executive director, Robert Cattle.
The award is presented to secondary school students across the province who exemplify the qualities that CTMA believes will help them move forward with a career within the industry, including a high proficiency in metalworking skills, a positive attitude, and having plans to pursue a career in a precision metalworking trade.
Henwood was nominated by IEWSS Specialist High Skills Major (SHSM) lead and manufacturing teacher, Ryan Rawlins, due to her skill, positive attitude, and drive. Henwood is currently in an Ontario Youth Apprenticeship Program (OYAP) Level 1 placement at Armada Toolworks Ltd., where she is training to be an industrial mechanic millwright, and hopes to begin her Level 2 apprenticeship in the fall.
Henwood received a $1,000 bursary, a certificate of achievement, and a Turner’s Cube.
“Why I’m interested in the metalworking trades is because it combines my passion for hands-on learning, as well as my interest in technology. I enjoy new, everyday challenges that I need to overcome and face, as well as fix. I like knowing that what I do contributes to creating production for a company, and knowing that what I need to do needs to be precise and functional,” said Henwood. “The award will help me with my long-term goals, as I will be putting it towards schooling, transportation, books, and tools so I can depend on myself and not others.”
Congratulations, Caprice, and good luck in the future!
