TLDSB hosts Battle of the Books

For a second consecutive year, Trillium Lakelands District School Board (TLDSB) secondary schools competed in the Battle of the Books!

The quiz show-style competition challenges student teams of four to read 7 pre-selected books. Schools then held competitions where teams raced against each other in “first to the buzzer” rounds of questions about the book collection, gaining team points for each win. The winning teams advanced to the Board-level competition, which took place on May 9 at Lindsay Collegiate and Vocational Institute (LCVI).

The “Wild Weldon” Team from I.E. Weldon Secondary School won first place, earning $200 for the team to purchase personal books, while also winning $300 for their school library. In second place was a special collaboration team between Bracebridge and Muskoka Lakes Secondary School and Haliburton Highlands Secondary School, who won $150 for the team and $250 for their school library. In third place was the Huntsville High School team, who won $100 for their team and $200 for their school library.

“It’s a great event that provides an opportunity for students to share their love of reading and have some friendly competition at the same time,” said TLDSB Secondary Curriculum Services consultant, Penta Ledger. “This year we had more students compete and some schools were able to enter two teams in the battle. We’re hoping to continue to grow this event in the future.”

The event was planned and managed by TLDSB secondary teacher librarians and included a visit from TLDSB Chair of the Board, Colleen Wilcox.
